Pre-visit Checklist

This checklist will help make sure you have everything you need to ensure your trip is a success.

Before your visit

Prepare teachers and chaperones

  • Review Mill City Museum confirmation materials received via e-mail. Distribute copies of the schedule to all teachers coming on the field trip.
  • Recruit chaperones. We recommend one chaperone, 21 or older, for every 10 seventh - twelfth grade students, and one chaperone for every 5 kindergarten - sixth grade students.
  • Assign teachers and chaperones a group from the confirmation. Make sure they know their group number and schedule.
  • Give chaperones the names of students they will be responsible for. Review museum rules and chaperone responsibilities.

Prepare students

  • Divide students into the groups indicated on the confirmation.
  • For the scavenger hunt, divide students into groups of 4 or 5, and assign a chaperone.
  • Review museum rules.

Prepare for arrival

  • Designate one teacher or chaperone from each group on the confirmation to check-in with the School Programs Facilitator upon arrival. They should be ready to share the total number of students, number of teachers/staff, and number of parent chaperones in their group.
  • If eating lunch at the museum, gather lunches into boxes or bags - mark them with the school and teacher or chaperone name.

On Arrival

  • Unload buses at the red meters in front of the museum's S. 2nd Street entrance.
  • A museum staff member and/or volunteer should be there to meet you in the main lobby.  If not, have your group leader check in at the ticket desk.
  • Bring lunches and coats into the museum (we will direct you to coatrooms).
  • Running late? Please call 612-341-7556 to alert the museum.

Chaperone Responsibilities

  • Chaperones must remain with their students at all times.
  • We ask chaperones to actively participate in activities with students and to administer a self-guided scavenger hunt.
  • Chaperones are responsible for following and enforcing museum rules.
  • Thank you for volunteering your time - we appreciate it!

Museum Rules

  • No running, pushing, throwing, or climbing
  • No food, beverage (including water), gum, or pens in the exhibit gallery
  • No screaming or yelling
  • No rough-handling of exhibits
  • If shopping in the museums store, only 5 students are allowed in the store at a time with a teacher or chaperone
  • Please do not play on the turbine pits in the Ruin Courtyard, and be careful if exiting the building through the courtyard - cars on the River Road cannot see you as you exit.
  • Ask questions! Museum staff and volunteers (in white aprons) can help answer your questions.
  • Be open-mined, and have a good time!
