Baking Lab

High quality flour produced by the Washburn Crosby Mills influenced how the world ate.  As students bake, they explore different aspects of flour.

Note:  Flour lessons have limited availability and tend to fill up quickly - schedule as early as possible to ensure best availability.

Choose an age appropriate lesson. Baking Lab lessons are 50 minutes long and taught in Mill City Museum's Baking Lab.

Choose one lesson:

Field to Table, K-3rd grade
Students experience the journey of wheat from field to table, learning what's involved with producing bread.  Students bake biscuits from scratch and examine artifacts.

A Taste of Immigration, 4th-7th grade
Through geography, history and food, students explore five nationalities that have made Minnesota their home.  Students can then taste an ethnic treat they make themselves.  Development of this program made  possible by The Morrison Family Fund for Mill City Museum.

Kitchen Tested!, 6th - 12th grade
Beginning in the 1900's, test kitchens were an important part of the development and marketing of food products. Participants in this lesson bake chocolate chip cookies with varying ingredients, then use their creativity to promote and "sell" their cookie to the rest of the class. Only the best and most trusted recipes wear the proud label "Kitchen Tested!"
